Deepak-Raj Gupta OAM, National Chair of the Australia India Business Council (AIBC), is driving efforts to strengthen trade relations between Australia and India. Featured recently in Canberra CityNews, Deepak highlighted AIBC’s focus on fostering collaborations across key sectors such as defence, technology, education, health, industry, and manufacturing to promote innovation and economic growth in the bilateral trade corridor.
Deepak brings a wealth of experience to his role, having founded the ACT chapter of AIBC in 2006 and serving as the first Indian-born MLA in the ACT Legislative Assembly. His nearly two decades of involvement with AIBC have positioned him as a key figure in advancing Australia-India ties.
As AIBC’s National Chair, Deepak is committed to enhancing trade opportunities and addressing the growing importance of India as a market for Australian companies. “India will soon become a major market for Australian businesses,” he remarked, pointing to the significant growth in bilateral trade and its untapped potential.
Deepak also emphasized the importance of Canberra’s Indian community, which has already contributed significantly through international students, tourism, and cultural exchange. However, he aims to expand this engagement to include innovation, investment, and new business ventures, advocating for a broader narrative beyond cultural stereotypes.
He further stressed the need to strengthen communication between governments and businesses, complementing the robust “people-to-people” ties that already exist. According to Deepak, Australian companies can greatly benefit from Indian advancements in scientific innovation and technology.
Describing the evolving partnership between the two nations, Deepak used the metaphor, “We’ve had our ‘romance,’ but it’s time to put the ring on the finger,” signaling his vision for a deeper, more formalized collaboration.
Under Deepak’s leadership, AIBC is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing Australia-India trade relations, fostering innovation, and creating meaningful economic opportunities for both nations.
