Salil Ankola recalls why his first visit to Siddhivinayak Temple with wife Ria was very special

Mumbai, Aug 28 (IANS) – Actor and former cricketer Salil Ankola opened up about the deep emotional connection he shares with Ganesh Chaturthi and why his first visit to Mumbai’s Siddhivinayak Temple with wife Ria remains one of the most special moments of his life.

Speaking about his family’s way of celebrating the festival, Salil said: “During Ganpati, we don’t bring an idol home or perform visarjan. For all ten days, we pray to the Ganpati idol that we already have in our home temple. We’ve always believed in celebrating festivals privately and positively.”

He added that as their children have grown up, they now enjoy the festivities even more. “Ria prepares prasad and bhog, we dress up, do the aarti, and pack prasad for all our staff and their families. They eagerly look forward to it every year, whether it’s Ganpati, Diwali, Durga Puja, Christmas, or Holi. Seeing their smiles brings us immense joy – that’s the real happiness behind these celebrations.”

Salil, who is a proud father to Karan and Rishika, said his faith has helped him navigate life’s challenges. “From sickness to good health, and in every aspect of life, God has blessed us. In my hometown Ankola, our family deity is worshipped in a unique way. Instead of fixed prayers, we simply talk to God directly. We follow the same tradition at home – there’s no priest or pandit, just us as a family making prasad and offering it to God with devotion.”

He shared that the entire family actively participates in prayers and decorations, turning it into a cherished tradition. “Now even Karan and Rishika eagerly wait for every festival. It has become a family ritual filled with love and togetherness.”

Revealing why Ganesh Chaturthi holds a special place in his heart, Salil said: “Our first visit to Siddhivinayak Temple with Ria was very special. We offered prayers there, and it was at that moment we accepted each other as husband and wife. Ganpati Bappa truly is Vighna Harta – the remover of obstacles.”

He recalled that when they first met, life wasn’t easy for either of them. “There were many challenges back then, but after that visit, life has only brought blessings. We always thank Bappa for that. For us, praying to him is an emotional experience and marks the beginning of all festivities. Our belief is simple – we just say, ‘Thank you, God.’ Whatever He decides for us, we accept it with gratitude.”
