Productive outcomes during productive visit: PM Modi hails landmark agreements signed during Japan visit

Tokyo, Aug 30 (IANS) — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday described his two-day official visit to Japan as “productive,” highlighting a series of landmark agreements that are set to strengthen the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

Productive outcomes during a productive visit. May India-Japan friendship scale newer heights in the times to come!” the Prime Minister posted on X after the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released details of the visit’s outcomes.

According to the MEA, the visit delivered a comprehensive set of agreements spanning defence, technology, economic cooperation, sustainability, and people-to-people exchanges.

A central achievement was the adoption of the India-Japan Joint Vision for the Next Decade, outlining a ten-year roadmap across eight priority areas, including economic growth, technology, mobility, sustainability, healthcare, and sub-national partnerships.

Security ties were elevated through a new Joint Declaration on Security Cooperation, aimed at strengthening defence collaboration and addressing regional and global challenges.

The two sides also unveiled an Action Plan for Human Resource Exchange, which targets the movement of 500,000 individuals—including 50,000 skilled workers from India to Japan—over the next five years.

Other key agreements include:

  • A Memorandum of Cooperation on the Joint Crediting Mechanism to support India’s climate goals.

  • The launch of India-Japan Digital Partnership 2.0, covering digital public infrastructure, AI, semiconductors, and IoT.

  • A new ISRO–JAXA implementing arrangement on Chandrayaan-5 lunar mission collaboration.

Several new initiatives were also announced, such as the India-Japan AI Initiative, the Next-Generation Mobility Partnership, the Sustainable Fuel Initiative, and measures under the Economic Security Initiative to bolster supply chain resilience.

Japan further committed to mobilising JPY 10 trillion in private investment in India over the next decade, while both sides agreed to deepen state-prefecture cooperation through reciprocal visits and regional business forums, particularly in the Kansai and Kyushu regions.

The MEA noted that these outcomes mark a “significant leap forward” in bilateral relations, reinforcing shared priorities in technology, sustainability, security, and economic growth.
