Melbourne, December 30 (Australia India News Newsdesk)
Melbourne cemented its reputation as Australia’s sporting capital by hosting the Pro Kabaddi League at the iconic John Cain Arena on December 28, marking a historic first for the Australia-India trade corridor.
While the Boxing Day Test typically dominates the city’s December sporting calendar, this ancient Indian sport, dating back to 1500 BC, brought its modern, high-octane appeal to a sellout crowd. The event featured a thrilling contest between Australian AFL stars, led by former Sydney Swans captain Josh Kennedy, and Indian Kabaddi superstars. The electrifying atmosphere was further amplified by Bollywood-style entertainment, live coverage on Channel 7, and a lineup of VIP guests and celebrities.
Notable attendees included cricketing legends Irfan Pathan, Shane Watson, and Ajay Jadeja, as well as Bollywood stars Neha Dhupia and Angad Bedi. The Indian High Commissioner to Australia, Gopal Baglay, officially inaugurated the event, emphasizing the growing cultural and sporting ties between the two nations.
