North Bengal landslides: Death toll rises to 23; Governor’s office activates rapid action cell

Kolkata, Oct 6 (IANS) — The death toll from the devastating landslides triggered by incessant rainfall in North Bengal has climbed to 23, officials confirmed on Monday.

In response to the worsening situation across the hills, Terai, and Dooars regions, the Governor’s Office has established a rapid action cell within Raj Bhavan to swiftly respond to distress calls from affected residents and stranded tourists.

According to the latest figures compiled by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the district administrations of Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri, 23 deaths have been confirmed so far. However, officials cautioned that the number could rise as rescue and recovery operations continue in the affected areas.

Raj Bhavan announced that a dedicated officer-on-special-duty has been assigned to oversee the rapid action cell, which will operate with a helpline number and email address for direct communication with those in distress. Additionally, the old “peace room” within the Governor’s House has been reactivated to serve as a temporary shelter for rescued individuals brought to Kolkata.

Governor C.V. Ananda Bose expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and urged citizens to remain calm and cooperate with rescue and relief teams.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to visit North Bengal later on Monday to assess the situation firsthand. “Several tourists are stranded in the region. I urge them to stay where they are for now. The administration is making every effort to rescue and assist those affected,” she said, adding that instructions have been issued to ensure hotels and lodges do not demand extra charges from stranded tourists during the crisis.

Trinamool Congress general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee has also directed party workers to provide full support and assistance to those impacted by the disaster.
