Look forward to joining ASEAN-India Summit virtually: PM Modi dials Malaysian counterpart

New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS) — Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said he looks forward to virtually participating in the 47th ASEAN-India Summit, scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur later this month. He also congratulated Malaysia for assuming the chairmanship of ASEAN.

PM Modi spoke with his Malaysian counterpart, Anwar Ibrahim, and confirmed his virtual attendance at the summit amid the Diwali celebrations in India.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Had a warm conversation with my dear friend, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia. Congratulated him on Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship and conveyed best wishes for the success of upcoming Summits. Look forward to joining the ASEAN-India Summit virtually, and to further deepening of the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”

During their discussion, both leaders reviewed the progress of bilateral relations and explored ways to expand cooperation in trade, technology, education, and security.

Sharing details of the exchange, Anwar Ibrahim said, “Last night I received a phone call from my friend, Prime Minister of the Republic of India, Narendra Modi, to discuss efforts to take the Malaysia-India relationship to a more strategic and comprehensive level.”

Acknowledging India’s Diwali festivities, Anwar confirmed that PM Modi would participate virtually in the ASEAN Summit and extended his Deepavali greetings to the Prime Minister and the people of India.

He reaffirmed Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening ties with India and advancing ASEAN–India cooperation “towards a more peaceful and prosperous region.”

The 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits will be held from October 26 to 28 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, bringing together more than 30 heads of state and government, including leaders from ASEAN countries and key dialogue partners such as the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.

The meetings will focus on regional peace, economic resilience, and inclusive growth under Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship theme — “Inclusivity and Sustainability.” The summit will conclude on October 28 with a closing ceremony and the formal handover of the ASEAN Chairmanship to the Philippines.
