Kolkata Police arrests two more Nigerians from Delhi for duping man of over Rs 1 crore in name of WHO

Kolkata, Aug 29 (IANS) – Kolkata Police have arrested two Nigerian nationals from Delhi in connection with a cyber fraud case involving over ₹1 crore, carried out in the name of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and a UK-based pharmaceutical company.

The arrests were made on Wednesday evening during a raid in the Palam area of South Delhi, led by Inspector Soma Maiti. This brings the total number of arrests in the case to five, as three other Nigerian nationals had been arrested earlier this month.

According to investigators, the accused tricked a Kolkata resident into believing they represented WHO and a British pharmaceutical company. Using a fake email ID and WhatsApp communication from a UK number, they convinced the victim to invest, ultimately cheating him of ₹1,10,41,250. The fraud came to light after the victim realised he had been duped and lodged a complaint with Kolkata Police’s Cyber Police Station in May.

During the Delhi raid, police apprehended the accused—identified as AGK Benjamin Nawabunwanne and Onechelem Jhan—from a second-floor flat. They attempted to flee, injuring a constable in the process, but were overpowered and arrested. Police recovered twelve Android phones, two basic phones, a laptop, a router, two UK SIM cards, four ATM cards and a pen drive from the premises. Investigators suspect the location was being used for document forgery.

The probe revealed that the fraudsters used multiple bank accounts and Delhi-based mobile numbers to siphon funds. Kolkata Police tracked them down by analysing IP addresses, call data records (CDR) and ISP details.

The raid was carried out with assistance from Delhi Police. Alongside Inspector Maiti, the team included Sergeant Shantanu Gayan and Constables Zed Hussain, K. Karmakar, A. Saha and M. Jamadar.
