The Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland (ECCQ) has announced a free in-person workshop aimed at supporting home care workers in better understanding and managing dementia-related behaviours.
The session, to be delivered by Dementia Australia on April 16, will focus on the challenges faced while caring for individuals living with dementia in home environments. It will explore why distress, resistance and occupational violence can occur, and how these situations can be handled effectively.
Participants will gain insights into how dementia affects communication, perception, judgement and a person’s sense of safety. The workshop will also examine how these changes can sometimes lead to behaviours that may appear aggressive.
Using person-centred approaches and the CAUSEd framework, the training will provide practical tools to identify triggers, reduce escalation and respond safely, while maintaining the dignity of clients and supporting worker wellbeing.
Organisers said the initiative is designed to equip care providers with essential skills and knowledge, particularly as demand for dementia care continues to grow. Limited spots are available, and early registration has been encouraged.
