Defending champions New Zealand announce Women’s Cricket World Cup squad

New Delhi, Sep 10 (IANS) – Defending T20 world champions New Zealand have named their 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, with six players set to make their debut at the 50-over event.

Among them is 22-year-old all-rounder Flora Devonshire, who has earned her maiden ODI call-up after standout performances in domestic cricket. Four players in the squad will be making their first appearance at any senior ICC tournament.

Veteran all-rounder Sophie Devine will captain the side in her fifth and final ODI World Cup, while Suzie Bates also gears up for her fifth appearance. Pace spearhead Lea Tahuhu has been named for her fourth World Cup, and Maddy Green along with Amelia Kerr are set for their third.

Head coach Ben Sawyer congratulated the selected players, noting the blend of experience and fresh talent. “A huge congratulations to all 15 players named to represent New Zealand. I’d like to especially acknowledge the four players set for their first World Cup – they’ve all earned this opportunity and I’m excited to see what impact they can have,” Sawyer said.

He admitted the selection process was challenging, with established players such as Fran Jonas, Lauren Down, Molly Penfold and Hannah Rowe missing out. “Leaving out the likes of Fran in favour of Flora was tough. We know Fran is a quality player, and at 21, she still has her best years ahead,” he explained.

Sawyer added that the squad was well prepared for the challenge, highlighting the team’s intensive training block since April. “This is the best prepared we’ve ever been. The focus on physical skills could make the difference in India,” he said, confident of replicating their T20 World Cup success.

New Zealand open their campaign against Australia in Indore on October 1.

New Zealand Squad: Sophie Devine (c), Suzie Bates, Eden Carson, Flora Devonshire, Izzy Gaze, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Bree Illing, Polly Inglis, Bella James, Amelia Kerr, Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair, Georgia Plimmer, Lea Tahuhu.
