Community marks Australian Sikh Heritage Day at Canning River Site

Consul General Kajari Biswas joined community members at the Australian Sikh Heritage Trail to celebrate Australian Sikh Heritage Day, recognising the long-standing contributions of the Sikh community to Western Australia and the nation.

Situated along the Canning River, the heritage trail stands on a historic cremation ground once used by early Sikh settlers in Western Australia. Historical accounts also indicate that the site was shared by members of other communities, including the Chinese community, reflecting the multicultural character of the region’s early migrant history.

The trail, supported by the City of Canning, serves as an important initiative to preserve and highlight the stories of early Sikh migrants and their contributions to the development of Western Australia.

Among those attending the event were Deputy Chair of Committees Hon Dr Parwinder Kaur MLC, MLA Yaz Mubarakai, MP Sam Lim, MLA Terry Healy, Deputy Mayor Mark Bain of the City of Canning, Mayor Ruth Butterfield of the City of Armadale, and Deputy Mayor Serena Williamson of the City of Gosnells, along with members of the Sikh community and local residents.
