Mumbai, Aug 27 (IANS) – Bollywood actresses Bhumi Pednekar and Dia Mirza have raised their voices over the devastation caused by flash floods in Jammu and Kashmir, urging attention and accountability for the ongoing environmental crisis.
Both actresses took to their Instagram Stories to share their thoughts on the disaster. Bhumi re-shared an image highlighting the severity of the situation with the caption: “Next 24 hours critical for Jammu and Kashmir”, adding, “Praying for everyone in all the flood-hit areas.”
Dia Mirza posted a chilling video showing a river sweeping away a section of the road. In her message, she questioned the unchecked harm being inflicted on nature for human development. “First Himachal, Uttarakhand and now Jammu and Kashmir… it has been relentless. Will this shake up the conscience of those destroying every system in nature that ensures balance? On the highway to man-made hell (sic),” she wrote.
The recent flash floods have claimed around 30 lives, including those in a Vaishno Devi landslide. Telecom services have collapsed across large parts of the Union Territory, cutting off communication and worsening the crisis. Authorities, with support from the District Administration, J&K Police, NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army, and local volunteers, have evacuated over 3,500 people and are working tirelessly to restore essential services and infrastructure.
The disaster follows a series of cloudbursts and extreme weather events in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Experts warn that the Western Himalayas, including Jammu and Kashmir, are warming faster than the rest of India, leading to heavier rainfall and increased flood risks. Relief and rescue operations remain underway in the region.
