Dhaka, Aug 19 (IANS) – A Dhaka court on Tuesday imposed a travel ban on Sheikh Hasina’s former military secretary, Major General (Retd.) Salahuddin Miaji, and three of his family members over corruption allegations.
The family members barred from leaving the country are Miaji’s wife Nazma Begum and daughters Samiha Sabnam and Raisa Sabnam, Daily Star reported. Judge Zakir Hossain Galib of the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court issued the order after an application from ACC Deputy Director Rezaul Karim, who is leading the investigation.
According to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Miaji, a former lawmaker from Jhenaidah-3, allegedly amassed large sums of money illegally, grabbed land in Jashore’s Chanchra union, and developed a 400-bigha park there by abusing his position. The ACC told the court it had credible information that Miaji and his family were attempting to flee the country, which would obstruct the probe.
Miaji and his brother-in-law were earlier arrested on February 18 from his Shyamol Chhaya Park in Rudrapur village, Jashore Sadar Upazila, after being surrounded by locals and students before being handed over to the police.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh courts have also taken action against other senior Awami League-era figures. On Monday, former Law Minister Anisul Huq was shown arrested in two cases linked to last year’s July protests, including the murder of an electrician and the attempted murder of another protester.
Former Election Commission Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed was also detained in a separate case filed over alleged election manipulation, treason, and fraud. The case, filed by BNP leader Salah Uddin Khan, accuses three former chief election commissioners and 24 others of rigging the 10th to 12th parliamentary elections.
These developments come amid a sweeping crackdown on Awami League leaders and officials under the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
