Dhaka, Aug 17 (IANS) — Bangladesh recorded one more dengue-related death in the 24 hours till Sunday morning, raising the country’s death toll from the mosquito-borne disease this year to 105, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
During the same period, 466 new patients were hospitalised with the viral infection, pushing the total number of confirmed cases in 2025 to 26,378, United News of Bangladesh reported. The latest fatality occurred in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) area.
Breakdown of new cases showed 83 in Barishal Division, 74 in Dhaka North City Corporation, 66 in Rajshahi Division, 60 each in Chattogram and Dhaka Divisions, 57 in DSCC, 47 in Khulna Division, 8 in Mymensingh, 6 in Sylhet, and 5 in Rangpur.
Currently, 1,262 patients are receiving treatment in hospitals across the country. By comparison, Bangladesh reported 575 dengue deaths in 2024.
To tackle the surge, health authorities last month issued fresh directives to hospitals. Measures include setting up dedicated fever/flu corners, reserving beds for dengue patients, categorising cases by severity (A, B, C), and ensuring adherence to national treatment guidelines.
Hospitals have also been instructed to maintain laboratory facilities for testing, stock sufficient diagnostic kits, and ensure availability of IV fluids. Medical teams trained in dengue management must be in place, while admitted patients should be provided with mosquito nets.
The DGHS issued the new guidelines amid a triple health threat in June, when Bangladesh simultaneously faced rising cases of Covid-19, dengue, and chikungunya. While Covid-19 infections have since declined, dengue cases continue to rise, officials said
