Chandigarh, Aug 19 (IANS) – A 14-year-old schoolboy tragically died in Punjab’s Ferozepur town after a licensed pistol accidentally went off while he was allegedly playing with it at home, police said on Monday.
According to investigators, the boy had returned from school and went to his room to take clothes from a cupboard, where a licensed revolver was kept. While handling the weapon, he is believed to have pressed the trigger, causing the bullet to discharge and strike him in the head.
Family members rushed to his aid after hearing the gunshot and found him lying in a pool of blood. He was immediately taken to a private hospital, and later referred to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital in Ludhiana, where doctors placed him on a ventilator. Despite efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
The police have taken custody of the body and launched an investigation into the incident, including the handling and storage of the firearm. Statements from the family have been recorded, and further details are awaited.
Earlier this year, in January, AAP leader and Ludhiana (West) MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi also died of an accidental gunshot wound while cleaning his licensed pistol.
