Shenzhen, Sep 18 (IANS) — India’s P.V. Sindhu produced one of her most clinical performances of the season to storm into the quarterfinals of the China Masters Super 750 on Thursday, defeating Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong 21-15, 21-15 in just 41 minutes.
The win was Sindhu’s first over Chochuwong in two years, ending a run of two consecutive defeats to the Thai shuttler, including one earlier this season at the Indonesia Open. Staying sharp from the outset, Sindhu maintained control in both games, keeping a steady lead and refusing to let her opponent dictate the tempo.
“I’m happy with the win,” Sindhu said post-match. “It was important for me to stay alert from the beginning, avoid easy mistakes, and give my 100 per cent. Winning in straight games boosts confidence, but you must always be ready for long matches and stay quick on your feet.”
The two-time Olympic medallist’s victory over the sixth seed marked her second top-10 win in a month and secured her first World Tour quarterfinal berth since January 2025. It also added to her growing list of scalps this season, following wins against Tomoka Miyazaki at the China Open and Wang Zhiyi at the World Championships.
Sindhu has been in commanding form in Shenzhen, having dispatched Denmark’s Julie Jakobsen 21-5, 21-10 in the opening round. The road ahead, however, looks tougher — she is likely to face world No. 1 An Se Young, who holds a flawless record against her, in the last eight.
