Hockey Victoria has unveiled the Melbourne Cobras as the newest team in the Hockey One League, a move aimed at boosting the profile and participation of hockey across Victoria.
The addition of the eighth franchise is expected to enhance high-performance opportunities for players in the state while strengthening connections with Melbourne’s growing Indian diaspora, where interest in the sport continues to rise.
Addressing the launch, Consul General Anish Rajan said the Melbourne Cobras have the potential to build stronger sporting links between Australia and India. He noted that the initiative could help foster people-to-people engagement while creating new possibilities for collaboration in sports development and related commercial sectors.
Officials highlighted that the franchise will play a key role in nurturing emerging talent and encouraging young players to pursue hockey, contributing to the sport’s long-term growth in Victoria.
