Guwahati, Nov 27 (IANS):
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday reaffirmed that the state will not compromise on women’s rights, as the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025 was introduced in the Legislative Assembly.
In a post on X, Sarma said the government is advancing with firm resolve to ensure justice, dignity, and legal protection for women. He emphasised that the proposed law reflects Assam’s commitment to ‘Nari Shakti’ and the strengthening of women’s status in society.
The Bill aims to ban polygamy across the state, a practice the government argues has caused exploitation, emotional distress, and legal vulnerability for many women. However, the legislation will not apply to areas under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, where tribal customs and traditions are safeguarded.
Under the Bill, entering into a second marriage while the first is still valid can invite up to seven years of imprisonment. If a person hides an existing marriage before marrying again, the penalty may extend to 10 years. The legislation also holds accountable those who facilitate such illegal marriages—priests, guardians, relatives, or others who knowingly abet them—who could face up to two years in jail.
A key provision includes compensation and legal support for women trapped in unlawful marriages, offering financial assistance and legal remedies that were previously inadequate. Enhanced penalties for repeat offenders further underscore the state’s zero-tolerance stance toward violations of women’s rights.
“This is a decisive step toward justice. The Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025 is not just legislation—it is a social commitment to protect the rights and honour of our mothers and sisters,” Sarma said.
