New Delhi, Oct 22 (IANS) — Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Wednesday hailed the rising number of Indian doctors featured in Stanford University’s 2025 list of the world’s top 2% scientists, calling it a proud moment for the country.
Taking to X, Goyal said the recognition reflects India’s growing expertise and global impact in medical research. “A proud moment for Indian doctors,” he posted, noting that the scientists were acknowledged for their “pioneering research, clinical achievements, and transformational impact in the field.”
The list includes 14 orthopaedicians, 41 paediatricians, and more than 6,000 faculty members from leading Indian institutions. Goyal also highlighted Dr. Arun Mullaji, a renowned orthopaedician and his personal friend, among the honorees.
In total, 6,239 Indian faculty made the single-year ranking, while 3,372 were recognised in the career-long category for 2024. Among institutions, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) contributed the largest number with 755 researchers, followed by over 330 from National Institutes of Technology (NITs), and 117 from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore. AIIMS had 80 researchers featured, including 56 from AIIMS New Delhi.
Stanford’s 2025 database ranks scientists using metrics such as citations, h-index, co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, and a composite c-score, considering both career-long and single-year contributions. Scientists in the top 2% of their sub-fields globally are included.
“This distinction stands as a testament to India’s growing expertise in medical research and the unwavering commitment of its scientific community to innovation and global excellence,” Goyal added.
