Hyderabad, Aug 27 (IANS) — Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday placed the state administration on high alert as heavy rains since Tuesday night inundated low-lying areas and disrupted road connectivity to several villages.
Overflowing rivulets, lakes and ponds led to flooding in multiple areas, with parts of Medak and Sangareddy districts particularly affected. Residential pockets were submerged, and several roads suffered damage, halting vehicular movement.
Traffic on the Narayankhed–Kangti road was stopped after water flowed over it, while a culvert near Lakshmapur village in Kamareddy district was washed away. Peddashankarampet in Medak received the highest rainfall of 20.4 cm, followed by Tekmal (20.1 cm) and Ramayampet (17.9 cm).
The downpour also dampened Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations across the state, delaying idol installations in many towns and villages. Hyderabad witnessed moderate rainfall since Tuesday night, disrupting festivities there as well.
CM Revanth Reddy has instructed officials to:
-
Evacuate residents from old or vulnerable houses and move them to safer areas.
-
Ensure power supply safety, especially around Ganesh pandals.
-
Coordinate between HYDRAA, GHMC, SDRF, Fire Services, and Police to assist citizens.
-
Stop traffic across inundated causeways, culverts and streams.
-
Have the Irrigation Department monitor ponds and water bodies at risk of breaches.
With the threat of waterborne diseases, sanitation teams in urban and rural areas have been directed to clear stagnant water and maintain hygiene. Medical and Health officials were told to stock essential medicines and set up medical camps in flood-hit zones.
The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall in several districts, including Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Hanumakonda, Jangaon, Karimnagar, Khammam, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nalgonda, Peddapalli, Suryapet, Warangal, Mahabubabad, and Yadadri Bhuvanagiri.
It also warned of thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (30–40 kmph) at isolated places across Telangana.
