US Open Draw: Gauff, Keys, Anisimova in Bottom Half as Sabalenka Faces Challenging Path to Semis

New York, Aug 22 (IANS) — The women’s singles draw for the 2025 US Open has set up intriguing storylines, particularly for the American contingent. Coco Gauff (No. 3), Madison Keys (No. 6) and Amanda Anisimova (No. 8) — all ranked inside the WTA top 10 — have landed in the same half, setting the stage for a potential all-American battle in the latter stages.

The top half is anchored by defending champion Aryna Sabalenka, joined by compatriots Jessica Pegula (No. 4) and Emma Navarro (No. 10). With no repeat champions at the Grand Slams this year, and Americans featuring in each of the last four major finals, the Flushing Meadows crown looks wide open.

Keys began the year by defeating Sabalenka in the Australian Open final, while Gauff followed with a victory over the Belarusian in the Roland Garros title match. Sabalenka, who beat Pegula to lift her first US Open crown last year, could once again face an American in her title defense.

The world No. 1 has a tough path ahead: she opens against Switzerland’s Rebeka Masarova, with a possible third-round clash against No. 31 Leylah Fernandez. A potential quarterfinal could pit her against Cincinnati finalist and No. 7 seed Jasmine Paolini. Pegula, meanwhile, begins against Egypt’s Mayar Sherif and may meet No. 30 Dayana Yastremska in round three, with rising star Mirra Andreeva looming as a possible quarterfinal opponent.

Gauff, who arrives with biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan as her new coach, will launch her campaign against Ajla Tomljanovic — remembered for ousting Serena Williams in her 2022 farewell match. The 2023 US Open champion will be determined to bounce back after a first-round Wimbledon exit, following a quarterfinal run in Cincinnati.

Venus Williams Returns

Adding to the excitement, veteran Venus Williams makes her comeback to Flushing Meadows in her first Grand Slam singles appearance since 2023. The two-time US Open champion (2000, 2001) enters as a wild card and faces No. 11 Karolina Muchova in a challenging opener.

Williams, who has played 24 of the past 27 editions of the tournament, has already seen action on the blue courts this week in the mixed doubles event alongside Reilly Opelka.

With the draw stacked with big names and tough match-ups, the women’s field at the 2025 US Open promises drama from the very first round.
