Washington, Aug 18 (IANS) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will arrive in Washington on Monday with strong backing from key European leaders as he prepares to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House.
The high-stakes talks are expected to center on Ukraine’s war with Russia and growing concerns that Kyiv may face pressure to accept Moscow’s terms for peace.
On the eve of the meeting, Trump wrote on Truth Social: “Big day at the White House tomorrow. Never had so many European leaders at one time. My great honour to host them!”
Zelensky will be joined by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
European officials fear the White House discussions could serve as a platform for Trump to urge Zelensky toward concessions outlined by Russian President Vladimir Putin during their Alaska summit last week. Putin’s conditions reportedly include Ukraine relinquishing its claim to Crimea and pledging never to join NATO.
EU leaders intend to use Monday’s meeting to seek clarity on Washington’s stance and what Moscow might be willing to concede in a potential peace deal. They also aim to secure stronger commitments for Ukraine’s future security.
French President Emmanuel Macron underscored the importance of unity, saying on Sunday: “If we show weakness today in front of Russia, we are laying the ground for future conflicts.” He stressed that Kyiv’s allies, who held a “coalition of the willing” video call before traveling to Washington, want a durable peace that safeguards Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
The German government said the agenda would cover security guarantees, territorial issues, and continued military and financial support for Ukraine. “This includes maintaining pressure through sanctions,” the statement noted.
Trump, however, has repeatedly argued that Zelensky should end the war quickly. On Sunday, he wrote on Truth Social: “President Zelensky of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight. No getting back Obama-given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!)… and no going into NATO by Ukraine. Some things never change!”
