PM Modi claims victory over Masood Azhar listing

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has designated Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist.

It took India almost a decade to get Masood Azhar listed as a global terrorist after it first moved a proposal to designate him as a global terrorist in 2009.

The move seems to be a success on India’s part for seeking justice for the terror attack in Pulwama for which JeM had claimed full responsibility.

As soon as India’s permanent representative to UN Syed Akbaruddin made the announcement, many leaders declared it as a huge diplomatic victory for India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the United Nations (UN) decision to declare Masood Azhar as a global terrorist was a big success for India’s efforts to root out terrorism and proved that the country’s voice could no longer be ignored on the global stage.

Today is a day that would make every Indian proud! I thank the global community and all those who believe in humanitarian values for their support. India’s fight against terror will continue. We will work towards peace and brotherhood in our planet,” PM Modi said.

Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman also gave credit to PM Modi’s leadership for UN’s decision against Masood Azhar.

In a tweet, Nirmala Sitharaman said, “India’s diplomacy succeeds in making the global community declare Masood Azhar a terrorist. The untiring effort of PMO India pays dividend. India is safe under PM Narendra Modi’s leadership. Great work, Minister Sushma Swaraj.

BJP MP MJ Akbar also took to Twitter to praise PM Modi and said, “Finally terrorists who wound India are getting terrified. Our country has PM Modi who seeks them in their sanctuaries. As he said, the international victory in hunt for terrorist Masood Azhar is only the beginning. The era of Congress weakness and vacillation is over.

BJP spokesperson Ram Madhav wrote a long post on UN’s decision against Masood Azhar and said that the credit went to “doggedness” of the Modi government.

In a Facebook post, Ram Madhav attacked the Opposition and said, “People of India are naturally rejoiced over this success. I am sure the Opposition leaders too feel the same way. Last time when China blocked the decision, the Congress president, in stead of criticising China, used the opportunity to attack PM Modi.”

However, Opposition leaders felt differently about the decision in India’s favour and condemned PM Modi for making a compromise in the matter.

While the move was initiated for the fourth time since 2009 after the dastardly Pulwama terror attack in Kashmir that killed 40 CRPF soldiers on February 14, the incident did not figure in the final document that has been put up on the website.

It is learned that tough negotiations between India, China and Pakistan led to the removal of Pulwama reference in the application since the initial application by US, UK, and France was cosponsored on the premise of the recent terror attack.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said, Like the UP cop who went ‘thain, thain’ because his gun stopped working; PM Modi delivers only cosmetic and no tangible actions in our fight against terror. JeM was already a designated group.

In a tweet, Asaduddin Owaisi said that Masood Azhar being declared a global terrorist was a meaningless designation since Pulwama reference was not in the application.

What did we get in return? We absolved Masood Azhar of not just Pulwama but all terrorism in Kashmir, by agreeing to this meaningless designation. National Security is not an exercise in event management,” Asaduddin Owaisi tweeted.

Former Jammu and Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah slammed the decision on Twitter and said, “No mention of terror in Kashmir and no mention of Pulwama. It’s amazing how quickly the sacrifices of the CRPF men were sold down the river to get a symbolic win.

Omar Abdullah called the UN decision against Masood Azhar a diplomatic victory for both India and Pakistan.

The Chinese diplomats must be a happy bunch today. Their wordplay has allowed both India & Pakistan to claim a diplomatic victory. That’s no small achievement,” Omar Abdullah tweeted.

In a press release, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala too hit out at PM Modi and said that they expected the Modi government to act at a greater speed against Masood Azhar.

Precious lives in terror attack in Pulwama could have been avoided if Modi government had pushed international community, including China to agree to declaration of Masood Azhar as international terrorist,” the press release said.
